Rita Showell is an award winning dressmaker/tutor/workshop host operating from her creative hub Studio 808, located at 808 Bundarra Road Saumarez Ponds close to Armidale. Rita operated fabric Fair for 36 years retailing quality fabrics and creating custom clothing before relocating to a purpose built studio. Riata has an extensive working knowledge of all aspects of clothing construction techniques from introductory to advanced and all the way through to couture having conducted workshops with world renowned author and educator, Claire Shaeffer. Rita conducts regular small group sewing lessons and workshops as well as hosting other specialist tutors in Studio 808.

Chaucer on Bridge Street Gallery

Chaucer on Bridge Street is a family owned and operated gallery displaying ceramics, paintings and textile work created by family members and other local artists. It was opened in 2000 by David Evans and since his death has been maintained by Helen and her son Michael. Michael makes as variety of crystalline ceramics including basins, birdbaths and water features as well as vases and mugs. On Saturdays he gives pottery classes in the gallery studio. Helen sews textile pictures and tactile books for young children. Examples of her work are on display. Some silver jewellery and Celtic jewellery is also available at the gallery.

Gunnedah Rural Museum

The Gunnedah Rural Museum is one of Australia's largest collections of early agriculture, industrial history and transport memorabilia. The museum covers an area of more the 14,000 square metres and has in excess of 23,000 items on display. Allow plenty of time for your visit to wander through the exhibits and collections. The museum houses tractors, steam engines, antique farm machinery, horse drawn and motorised vehicles, household items, antique firearms, blacksmithing tools, toys, McDonagh model railway, shearing display, crafts and gift shop. A well stocked souvenir gift shop is located on site. The museum has ample parking space out front available for cars with caravans, motor homes and visiting coach groups.

The Mackellar Centre

The Mackellar Centre

A purpose built multifunctional facility dedicated to arts, culture, literature and history. This is a space to explore the Dorothea Mackellar story and the home of the poetry awards. This landmark is located in Gunnedah, north-west New South Wales, and can be found in South Street (Anzac Park). The centre offers an opportunity to take poetry lovers from far and wide on a journey into this “wordy” world. Experience the poetry of Dorothea Mackellar in the town that has inspired some of her works. The centre also houses the extensive archives and records of the Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards and the headquarters of the national poetry competition. The Jean Isherwood Water Colour Collection depicting verses of ‘My Country’ is displayed in the Bill Clegg Wing of the Mackellar Centre and is worth a special visit.

Gunnedah Water Tower Museum

The Water Tower Museum opens doors to the shire’s past and current history … in word and pictures. The museum has countless photographic images in its files along with a display of watercolours and drawings by the late John McDonagh who painted the town’s historic buildings and monuments. There is a collection of beautiful gowns and the top floor features a mural of the early Indigenous history and the arrival of European explorers. The external walls feature two large murals honouring our Vietnam War veterans by artist Jenny McCracken and are part of the Australian Silo Art Trail.
