Photography and visual arts. Spanning both digital and film, my artistic focus is on portraiture, architecture, street and landscapes, while my professional activities include portraiture & headshots, architecture & real estate, weddings & events, food & beverage and commercial.

ARTIST STATEMENT

If Sontag is to be believed, "the camera makes reality atomic": Meaning that through photography, the world becomes a series of unrelated, freestanding particles. Except, that's not how I see it. The world through my photography is a series of interrelated, emotionally-laden collections of pixels and inks. As a flâneur, I observe, I document, I seek to interact and I seek to relay not just my thoughts and feelings associated with the world and its inhabitants, but to invoke strong and strange feelings in those who view my work. As I see it, the world and its inhabitants are a series of particular particulates arranged via patterns, connected both knowingly and unknowingly through this thing we call life. I seek to float above, beside or within these patterns and reflect them back upon the viewer, to stimulate, provoke and elicit emotion.

Karen is a creative artist working in acrylics, watercolour, pen and wash, linocut printing and mixed media. She paints a wide variety of subjects and themes.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Creating artworks is therapy for me. It’s something I really enjoy and find it very relaxing but also challenging. I like to paint subjects that resonate with me - a beautiful landscape, an inspiring scene, a loved family pet, an interesting face. There is nothing more satisfying for me as an artist than to find a new home for my artwork where it can be appreciated and enjoyed.

Karen has had no formal training but has benefitted from many informal classes and workshops. She has exhibited regularly at Redland Yurara Art Gallery and Studio, Thornlands Brisbane, Redland Art Gallery, Cleveland Brisbane and more recently Glen Innes Art Gallery where she was highly commended at the Glen Archies Portraiture Competition in 2019 and 2021

Writer, weaver, designer, digital media creator

ARTIST STATEMENT

Lucy Munro lives amongst the poplars and the pear trees in the rural highlands of Northern NSW; a pen in hand, and a cowboy and sausage dog by her side. She is deeply affected by the patterns, colours and changing faces of the landscape across the seasons, and her office is in a hilltop paddock with the cows. Lucy has an Honours in Graphic and Textile Design from UNSW and is currently studying a masters of writing.

BIO

Lucy graduated with Honours in Design (Graphics and Textiles) from UNSW in 2018, specialising in pattern creation and fibre weaving. She spent six months studying at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, India during this time, and was exposed to the incredible world of colour and pattern that exists there. Her rug and fabric designs were selected by Master block printer, Sufiyan Khatri to be commissioned and printed at his studio in Bhuj. Lucy also interned with fibre artist Harriet Goodall in Robertson, learning intricate weaving techniques. Lucy worked at the online publication The Planthunter from 2017-2020, editing, creating digital content and penning essays, interviews and feature articles about the complexity of interactions between plants and people. In this role, she interviewed some of the best garden designers, creatives and thinkers from across Australia and the world, including Kate Cullity, Juan Grimm, Carolyn Robinson, Charles Massey, Lalage Snow and Alice Fox. She has also spoken on Radio National with David Astle and Casey Bennetto about some of these works. Lucy’s writing has appeared in Belle Magazine, The Planthunter, Smith Journal, New England Magazine, Art:Place exhibition, and most recently, amongst garden writer and historian Trisha Dixon’s book Spirit of the Garden, published by the National Library of Australia. Lucy is currently completing her Masters in Art (Writing) from the University of New England.

ARTIST STATEMENT

For as long as I can remember I have craved and explored creative outlets in many forms and mediums. My most recent love affair and favourite so far is with pottery. I love the process of creating pieces for the home and garden that can be practical or purely decorative. I love how raw and organic pottery is in every aspect, from beginning to end. I love how deeply satisfying it is to share the creative practice and the finished pieces with others. Late nights at pottery have become a regular part of my life now and have allowed me to play, learn and truly enjoy the time I have with my hands in the clay..

Chainmailling

Using fencing wire, craft wire, & a pair of pliers, I create a range of dark age inspired garments and jewellery. Out of the 19 different chaining practices I find Byzantine Weave and Sweetpea are fun to do, 4-1 is more versatile. I create and perfect my craft into pieces that I love. I welcome commissions.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am Welsh with Anglo-Indian origins, raised in a gypsy inspired lifestyle. Origins alone should explain my passion for chaining, plus it was an easy to cart around. My inspiration is my historical link with my heritage. From the heaviest chain shirt, the neck chain, your trouser chain, to the piece on your finger, I find focus, passion and a creative mediative quality associated with the practice of chain mailing.
I sometimes believe I was born in the wrong century!

Digital media

When taking photos I strive to include elements which are relevant to the premise of the picture so that, as much as is possible, the picture speaks for itself. By careful choice of location, lens and composition, I try to only include what is desirable while excluding what is not. I always consider my subject in relation to its background and the quality of light that falls onto it.

For ambient light portraiture, I first look for the best light and then the background, only then do I place the subject. When shooting Landscapes I like a strong foreground element. Using a very wide lens and getting in close achieves this. I photograph many other subjects.

ARTIST STATEMENT

It was 1983 when I first peered through the lens of an SLR. I loved the way you could selectively focus on an object and isolate it from its surroundings. I fell in love with photography in that very first moment.

In 1986, employed as a Lab Technician and Printer in a photolab. I had access to a full colour lab as well as my own B&W darkroom. During this period, I devoured and inhaled photography, teaching myself the art of taking and producing pictures. By 1988 I was working as a press photographer. In the 1990s I went freelance. I am still learning the art.

I am self-taught. I have had over 30 years of photographic experience firstly as a Lab Technician and Printer, then a press photographer, and now a freelance photographer.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I have always had an interest in art and I have been painting on and off all my life. My paintings are about my many journeys and the many hats I wear – it is my spiritual strength and learning more about my family connections to the places, we visit. My spirit has grown stronger and wiser over time (55 plus years) as I continue to gain more knowledge of my Aboriginal cultural heritage.

‘Connection to country is inherent, we are born to it, it is how we identify ourselves, and it is our family, our laws/lore, and our legacy’ …My art/weaving takes on many forms. I bring a modern expression to an ancient custom. Despite significant change and diversity, art retains an underlying unity of inspiration—the land and the peoples’ relationships with it. It is simultaneously connected to the past whilst engaged with the present. My art/weaving is engaging with the world through actions which are lively, positive, political, social and creative. I love the way tasks overlap with memories. I enjoy painting and weaving for healing, to feel good and to connect to my unique Aboriginal culture. My paintings and weaves are merely a new form incorporating the classic elements of Aboriginal Life. They state a person's relationship to those around them, to the land and to the Dreaming. They also represent a new context of interaction between Aboriginal and western societies – as a First Nation artist I need to be able to ‘walk in two worlds’, I need to be two ways strong, strong in traditional culture and strong in the new ways – contemporary ways.

Through modern art and the knowledge holder of cultural practices of weaving I am able to introduce and pass on my culture to my community and the world beyond. I am an artist who loves to use contemporary colours in my artworks and weaving. I love to share my cultural practices with friends and family it keeps my spirit strong to see the joy my art/weaving brings to them. I use a wide range of modern materials and techniques to create contemporary works of art. My inspiration comes from creation, the old people, the inner spirit, my family connections, my life journey and what makes me happy.

James Haselwood is a highly active live and recording Bass player within the Australian music scene. First arriving in the broader spotlight as a member of the Dissociatives (featuring Daniel Johns[Silverchair], Paul Mac and the Presets) in 2005. From there his career has extended to working with a diverse spectrum of artists in Australia and internationally including: Natalie Imbruglia, Mia Dyson, Dan Akroyd, Jon Cleary(New Orleans), Alex Lloyd, Tina Harrod to name a few. The Kev Carmody live DVD recorded at the State Theatre featuring Paul Kelly another highlight. After living and performing in NYC James returned to Australia to take care of bass duties on the 2014 series of The Voice Australia featuring Will.i.am and Kylie Minogue. Following that James spent several years touring and recording with Kasey Chambers. Recorded Bass on the soundtrack for the Emmy award winning netflix series “Beatbugs” Currently touring and recording with Tim Minchin and about to pick up the 2021 “back” tour

I am an art educator and artist with an interest in community art projects, particularly ceramics.

My creative practice is based on my work as a visual art teacher where I facilitate student creativity and projects in a range of art forms. Collaboration with community groups and project work based around well-being and creativity with purpose is my passion. My work as a ceramic artist is developing around exploring sculptural hand-built forms as well as domestic ware and thrown forms.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My formal art study began at Sydney University where I studied Fine Arts in the early 1990’s. My Grad Dip in Visual Arts Education and a TAFE certificate IV in Ceramics came after that. My fascination for art history and the art world has been stimulated through travel and hundreds of professional development events in visual arts teaching. My own practice has been facilitating my many exceptional students to high level of achievement in their HSC work. My roles include president of the Glen Innes Pottery Club, Co-ordinator of Fringe Trash Art Festival, Curator of the annual Art Impress! Art Exhibition. Community arts projects include “Precious Flora”, Wytaliba creative recovery project, Naidoc “Because of Her We Can” Project, Art in the Heart Ceramic Mural amongst many others. Recent exhibitions and prizes include “Claytime” Ceramics Exhibition and the NSW Teachers Federation Teachers Art Prize.

My nan has been a potter for many years, and I’ve always been interested in trying it, so when I saw a course running, I decided to give it a go. I am in the process of experimenting with different techniques and forms to find me niche. I have found an interest in the ancient form of pit firing, which give each piece a unique finish. The idea of different natural waste can give certain colours and textures to a piece excites me. I love being outdoors and a part of the nature, Pottery is an extension of nature and getting to work with clay brings an enormous satisfaction into my life. Clay is a versatile medium that allows me an endless possibility from of creation. Not only do I do pottery for the enjoyment I do it for the peace it brings me, with the busy life I live it is my own space to explore and enjoy, and if my pieces bring joy to others, it is a bonus.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Allana has found an enjoyment creating hand-built work, from sculptures, ornaments, to coil or slab-built vessels. She takes inspiration from her surroundings. Even though she has only been creating for a short time, she won grand champion at her local show for her work, sold 8 pieces at a local exhibition, won people choice in a local pop-up window exhibition, had 3 commission jobs and sold over 60 pieces locally. Allana Price is a very busy mother of 3 young children and runs 2 business on her family property near Emmaville. She was brought up on a property and loves the feeling she gets from being out in the bush. She fell deeply in love with ceramics after taking a 6 week course, she now has been creating just shy of 2 years. She has only completed an additional 6-week course within this time. Allana collects pieces from nature and takes photos to use as a creative stimulus. She creates her pieces at the local pottery club, which she is co treasurer of with her friend and fellow creator Brigette. They are always looking at opportunities to expand or knowledge and try new techniques, with hope to create an online side business as well as creating commission pieces for the community.

Richard Moon is an artisan silversmith and jewellery manufacturer based at The Makers Shed, 123 Grey Street Glen Innes. He sources design inspiration and materials from all things retro, recycled and re-purposed. Wherever possible, all his work is created using sustainable and recycled materials and techniques. Richard co-designs original pieces for customers with design ideas; remodels existing pieces; does jewellery repairs and holds regular silversmithing workshops at The Makers Shed.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Everything I make is different. I don’t have a particular style and I sometimes create lines of jewellery. Inspiration can come on the spur of the moment or evolve over weeks. The finished result is not always exactly as the idea began, but nothing goes up for sale until I am happy with it as a very special piece.

I classify myself as an 'emerging artist' who does commission work with Zentangles. I also dabble in photograph, pottery, watercolour an art in general

I have often dabbled in artistic practise with little or no training but as I grow older I am finding many different media to pay with. I have become enamoured of 'Zentangling' over the last two years and have been selling may pieces on line and at local markets, and taking on commission work in this style. I am currently taking courses in pottery and artist practice and have completed a digital photography course.

I have participated in two exhibitions - the Glen Innes Art Galley Christmas exhibition (2020) and the CWA Guyra Evening Group Exhibition (2021). I have entered my photography at the local show, earning 1st, 2nd and high commendation award. I have completed a hand building pottery class for beginners with Max Powell (2021) and am currently studying wit Tanya Robertson-Cunninghame, who is conducting an ongoing art course covering all the basic. I completed a digital photography course with Steve Wright at the Glen Innes TAFE (2015)

ARTIST STATEMENT

Sarah is a relative newcomer to the art world, but has always had a love of creativity, leaving school to study Graphic Design, during which she realised she had a passion for drawing, particularly portraiture and what could be achieved with the simplicity of pencil on paper. Her early works won awards, and caught the eye of Lloyd Hornsby, curator and owner of Gawura Gallery to encourage her to develop her art practice. In a short period of time, Sarah’s work is in high demand, being one of the sought-after artists at Gawura Gallery.

Sarah’s work is influenced by the Rural New England Region, having grown up on the family farm in Glen Innes. With a medium of pencil, and a focus on realism and attention to detail, she has a goal for each artwork to capture the character, emotion and story behind the subject. Beginning primarily in black and white, she has begun exploring colour and how that can add depth in bringing an artwork to life.

Aboriginal Artist (Yuin man from Wallaga Lake)

ARTIST STATEMENT

Lloyd Gawura Hornsby (b.1947) Koori, descendent of the NSW Aboriginal Yuin People. His passion and talent for art manifested in childhood and developed while in his adolescence. In fact he wooed his childhood sweetheart Wendy (now his wife of 53 years) with gifts of paintings and carvings. Lloyd never paints on location; he uses knowledge and observation as a basis for finished paintings. His artwork comes together using the traditional dot technique used widely by the northern Indigenous artists. Lloyd’s strong knowledge base of sketching and drawing are evident in the detail with his bold use of colour to finish the experience. At the age of 73 my learning is continuing today through the discovery of Aboriginal culture and life. Through the passing down of stories, our history and life experiences, all are adding to the richness of my understanding. This knowledge is the basis to all of my artworks.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I'm a 68yro, white, male OAP with a collection of physical glitches. I move a bit slow these days. Artists come and go like new model cars - bright and shiny for a while. Galleries, teachers, government arts administrator and arts departments remain. It seems to me that artists have been running a relay and passing on a baton since we were making prehistoric images on rock walls. I haven't drank alcohol or used any other mind altering drugs since Jan 1999. So? I don't do "drinks etc, and mingle, schmooze and be seen at exhibition openings, events. I prefer to follow my art practice at my own pace and whim.
Pretty well retired.....

Ceramicist and Painter

I create abstract landscape paintings and rustic Nordic inspired ceramics. Living in a rural community it’s hard not to be inspired by the nature around you. I also draw inspiration from my country of birth – Denmark. My practice is about place - a sense of place, a connection to place and the feeling of belonging to a place. It can be a psychical place, a place of dreams or a place in my heart. I love colours and I create colour combinations as reference to places and days. As a painter, I work by mark making, using movement and form and by layering of colour. I quite often incorporate texture into my paintings, and often paint a canvas over and over again. My ceramics are mainly home wares made from rustic speckled clay using a white glaze. The use of white is another reference to my Nordic heritage. It’s all hand formed, made with attention to detail and intentional imperfections. This gives the wares a gorgeous rustic and organic feel. Through my art I unite artistic impressions from two continents and cultures, which over time has fused and become my own unique style.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I grew up in Denmark spending most of my childhood holidays either on my grandparent’s farm or in the lovely town of Menton on the Mediterranean south coast of France. I migrated to Australia in my thirties to pursue a lifelong dream of living a creative life in relaxing and tranquil (or as we Danes would say ‘hyggelige’ ) surroundings.I star ted working with clay as a teenager and for many years ceramics were my only focus. I have always painted and can’t really say when it became more serious, but I participated in my first group exhibition in the late 90’ties and had my first solo exhibition of paintings in 2007. Alongside my ambition to create, I have owned and managed a café, a small art gallery, an art supply retail store, an art & craft shop and now an online art business. In 2017 I started teaching watercolour painting through local workshops, something I really enjoy doing. Most of my training has been through TAFE and by participating in workshops run by other artists. I have exhibited in group exhibitions since 1999 and held solo exhibitions since 2007. These days the internet has taken on the role of galleries, and I mainly show and sell through my own website or online galleries.

Ceramicist and Potter

Clay is my primary artform. I have been moulding clay into pieces of art, functionality, & beauty for decades. My inspiration is far reaching, from my lineage of Romany Gypsies & English, and a teenager migrant arriving in Australia, discover a whole new world of landscape and people - the human face, all account for my creative practice. I take inspiration from contemporary culture & Expressionist painter like Mark Chagall. I love teaching and sharing my knowledge.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My upbringing, Romany Gypsy/English parents, a teenage migrant, and a young adult choosing the alternate life style of my father's ancestries, best describes my artistic life. The feeling of coming from a 'subculture within society', always the feeling of being on the fringe, constantly shows in the eccentric nature of my work. From a very young age I have been motivated by the need to create. I am inspired how I can express myself through art. I create to soothe my soul, to bring joy into other people's lives, and send my children out into the world. Discovering the medium of clay for the first time was like a duck discovering water. I've been working with this medium for over 20 years and I am still discovering new ways of expressing myself with the beautiful tactile medium. I love moulding clay into teapots, my English up bring, no doubt, bringing this art form of beauty and practicality to the community. For years with drawing and design, I could actually transfer my creative expression into 3D, putting the images on surfaces that people could use their everyday lives. I am always the student and the Clay is my master.

CREATIVE PRACTICE

Artist, Teacher, Drawing, Oil and Watercolour.

My themes are based on time, place & experience. I am environmentally inspired. My latest exhibition based on Water and Light was an escape from endless drought and fire. Painting for me is a problem solving, I have done it all my life, it is my safe place. Creativity is like capturing water in your hand, the more you try to contain it, the more it slips away. Creativity needs to be honest, don't pretend it is something that it is not.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Visual Arts has been a constant throughout my life. I commenced teaching Visual Arts in my early twenties, which hastened my own steep learning curve in gaining the necessary experience & qualifications. Creating art is about problem solving & that is the ongoing challenge.
