ARTIST STATEMENT

I laugh at my own jokes. Sometimes I tell them to other people, more often I make them into art. Having spent years working as a scientist, quantifying the world through an objective lens, I relish in exploring the fantastical through a subjective (mostly silly) lens. I create illustrations, written stories, large-scale murals, and the odd sculpture here and there.

BIO

James O'Hanlon is an artist and storyteller based in Armidale. He works at intersection of art and science and creates work that celebrates themes of nature, exploration, and discovery. James’ large scale public art pieces can be seen throughout Armidale and regional NSW and his original works have been featured in several solo and group exhibitions. His debut novel ‘Silk and Venom: The incredible lives of spiders’ was released in October 2023, and he is currently illustrating a number of non-fiction childrens’ books. James was the 2021 recipient of the Varuna-New England Writers Centre Fellowship and the 2022 recipient of the Helen Dangar Memorial Bursary.

James is available for mural commissions, illustrations, and workshops/presentations.

Visual artist working across painting, printmaking, drawing and mixed media

ARTIST STATEMENT

My painting practice is centred around the representation and mediation of the natural world. Currently, my work is concerned with representing locations that reconstruct nature, such as gardens, aquariums, and museum displays. These locations act as a model through which I explore how we experience and consume the spectacle of nature more broadly within contemporary culture.

BIO

I completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours) and a Doctor of Philosophy, Creative Arts, at the School of Art & Design at the Australian National University in Canberra. I have worked extensively in arts education as a lecturer at the School of Art and Design from 2008-2016 in the Painting Workshop. Currently I work as a freelance arts teacher across the public and private sector.

In 2021, I won the Stanthorpe Art Prize and The Pring Memorial Prize as part of the Wynne Prize. In 2016, I won the Trustees’ Watercolour Prize in the Wynne Prize. I have been a selected finalist in art prizes such as the Mosman Art Prize, the Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award, McClelland Watercolour Prize, the Elaine Bermingham Watercolour Prize, Flowing Water: Taoyuan International Watercolour Biennial (Taiwan), and the Fabriano International Watercolour Biennial (Italy).

Across my career, I have exhibited work in artist-run-initiatives as well as commercial and public art galleries around Australia and internationally. I have undertaken artist residencies at the Bundanon Trust, Hill End Artist Residency Program, Hazelhurst Arts Centre, The Old School Mount Wilson, the Australian National University and the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, Valencia, Spain. In 2016, I became a member of the Australian Watercolour Institute and an Artist Ambassador for Winsor and Newton Australia.

Millinery – structured felt hats, wet felt hats, straw hats, sinamay hats and fascinators

ARTIST STATEMENT

I have had a passion for textiles from a very early age, learning dressmaking from my grandmother when I was 12. I consider myself a ‘fibre junkie’ and love to experiment and work with a large selection of fibres. I create hats and fascinators from a wide range of fibres including, superfine merino, alpaca, crossbred merino, banana leaf, silk, cotton, merino blends including merino and silk, paper, a range of straws. I make a range of hat accessories including changeable hat bands to jaze up your hat and macreame hat hangers. I have also explored upcycling pre loved, unloved and vintage hats, whereby I re-block them, and trim them with vintage belts and broches where possible.

One of my many occupations over the year has been a teacher as a result I enjoy sharing my skills and passion and teach wet felted cloche style hats to eager members of local communities.

Hats are my passion, I love to wear them and make them and often struggle to part with them.

BIO

I have a Bachelor of Applied Science in Textiles and Food.

I have undertaken a series of short millinery courses both in person and via zoom from milliners around the world.

A lot of millinery skills are from trial and error and hands on experimentation, applying my science background and understanding of textile fibres and how they behave

Marie Larkin is a fine artist creating mixed media paintings and drawings. Commissions accepted.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I’ve always been drawn to things aged, weathered or vintage that tell a story through the marks left by use or time. Like rusting tin sheds and neglected exterior walls and fences, or driftwood and peeling bark, or the old furniture and found natural and man made objects I have collected and placed about our home, a history is sensed through the patina of colours, marks and remnants of previous coats of paint.

Creating a rich ‘history’ of marks informed by my love of well worn textures, is the driving element that underpins my current explorations. I strive to create paintings with an engaging balance, abstract in structure yet organic in my choice of colors, mark making and layered techniques. Each mark and application of colour leads me to the next in my creative path from beginning to the completion of a piece that for me is genuine and has integrity. I build layers in a process that is both additive and subtractive, beginning ‘in the moment’ with less intent as I apply paint and pigments and make marks with brushes and a variety of tools into the wet surface, to build texture and depth. I erase, scratching, sanding, scrubbing. I add, washing, making marks and lines. I conceal and reveal. The process that allows the expressive forms to emerge is both accidental and purposeful. There is an exciting element of anticipation and surprise process as I reveal marks I remember making and loved or discovering ones I had forgotten were there.

Having been a representational artist for over twelve years, removing the recognisable object or subject from my work has allowed me to explore structure and tension. Tension between the muted colors, subtle textures and marks with that of the bold forms that conceal and in turn reveal nuances in my paintings. I seek to create pieces that have a fundamental strength and stability while simultaneously having a sense of the transitory, drawing attention with a bold statement, but inviting a lingering, intimate contemplation through the whispered ‘history’ of ‘older’ marks revealed.

BIO

Marie Larkin is an Australian artist from rural NSW. She began her career as an artist in the 1990’s, making fine embroidered pieces revealing aspects of her daily life as a mother. She won both The Dame Nancy Buttfield Embroidery Prize and The Namoi Valley Cotton Fibre Acquisitive Award for her work. Her exhibition ‘Revealing Threads’ was the recipient of a 10,000 AUD Arts Grant, touring Regional Galleries in three states.

Marie began painting seriously after 2008 and spent some time exploring mixed media. Over the past twelve years she has earned her place as one of Australia’s most successful Lowbrow artists with a substantial global following of fans and collectors. She has exhibited in both group and solo shows with galleries such as Corey Helford Gallery and Copro Nason in Los Angeles, Modern Eden Gallery in San Francisco, Urban Nation in Berlin and AFA Gallery in New York. Her work has been published in leading art journals worldwide.

The last five years have been a journey of experimenting with various leaves and fabrics. I love that I am able to grow most of the plants I print with.

As a self taught glass artist who gathers inspiration from the wildish place between sleep and waking, I attempt to create what comes to me with no idea how sometimes...just faith and gratitude that my hands and mind continue to assist me to create what is seen or felt. My artistic vision is the exploration of the fragility & diversity of life, one aspect being our natural environment & the other in the more human realms of healing from trauma.

I am a mixed media artist and artisan creating artwork, jewellery and sculptural pieces.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am continually fascinated by the innate beauty and potential of my sometimes unconventional materials, experimental techniques and the ability of my art making to tell stories upon a canvas.

Viewers of my work describe it as ethereal, magical and rich in texture and detail. I have been an artist since a small child when I "made do" with the materials I could find around me and manipulated them into objects and artworks which I found to be beautiful and full of meaning. I am largely self taught and for more than thirty years have mapped my own journey of experimentation which lead me into ever new fields of creative expression.

My artwork is for an audience which appreciates the artist who strives to be authentic, skilful and true to representing their unique vision of the world.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Tania Hartigan is a woman of the land with great knowledge of bush foods and owner of ‘The Artshack’ at Wallabadah, a paradise with deep history in its soils. She grew up in Woolbrook and belongs to the Gamilaraay people with family ties connecting her to Barraba, Quirindi and Gunnedah in the New England North West. Tania grew up surrounded by family and strong role models, with grandparents who always put family first, aunties and uncles that contributed her growth and cultural knowledge.

Those same priorities of a tight knit family have been instilled in Tania, she started her family tree as a young girl and has been adding to it ever since.

“I love organising family reunions, I am moved to inspire my kids, nieces and nephews to keep their family close,” she said.

Tania uses these bonds as inspiration, capturing family portraits in pastels. Amongst her other inspirations, she describes herself as being earthy, connected to country and all it’s whispers of history and life. ‘The Artshack’, Tania’s farm, is her happy place,

“It feels like equal part luck and fate that I ended up here. The terrane the country the trees the ruggedness of the land felt instantly like home.”

Tania loves to be immersed in the landscape, around the gum trees and native plants and lively nature. While on a walk around her property, she discovered evidence of sacred sites that is evidence Gomeroi people have travelled through and lived there for thousands of years. Tania says,

“We all look, but we don’t see. Art has taught me to slow down and take in the little details that slip past you when life is at full pace.”

Tania loves working across the board with mediums, painting is her go to and getting lost in the tones and hues. She also has a talented hand for portraits, print making and weaving.

I live in Northern NSW and work from my purpose built studio that sits a few minutes walk from the front of our house surrounded by beautiful views of undulating farming country. It is a perfect creative oasis where I paint daily. I am inspired by any number of things but my work definitely leans toward the organic shapes found in nature. Plants provide a perfect balance of colour combined with line in unpredictable and surprising ways. I absorb everything and use the impressions of my memories to inspire the work. I prefer to work on canvas and use acrylics in order to work quickly and intuitively capturing spontaneous gestural marks. Working in this way the outcome is never apparent from the start, the piece takes on a life of its own as I go with each mark informing the next and dictating a certain path. I am continually excited by colour combinations and fascinated by line using graphite, pencil and oil stick and scratching back through layers of paint to add dimension. Collage is a favourite, which I find incredibly therapeutic and this more controlled part of the work satisfies my need to arrange forms for a visually pleasing aesthetic.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Each time I walk over to the studio I try to leave expectations behind so that when I start I am open to possibilities. The outcome is not so much the aim as is the journey to a resolution, a series of marks shapes and colours that form an experience that resonates with me. Each work serves to teach me that I have more to learn which keeps me coming back. My work finds resolution most often in abstract florals, colourful forms and lines that assemble to suggest unruly bouquets. I recognise these as interpretations of elements I see around me, most often at home especially on my walks. Prickly pear growing up along the roadside, weeds and brambles entwined in the fence line, a little pop of colour from a wildflower, these things make up my vocabulary of paint. I use a variety of media in colour, layers and textures to express my internal landscape, which is made up of all the emotions associated with my everyday life. My visual culture is vivid and joyful with the intent to enchant the viewer and inspire optimism.

I've been involved in music for my whole adult life. Predominantly as a recording session drummer, front man of the Sydney band 'The Social Norm' and more recently releasing my own music under my own name 'Tim Godwin'.

I also have experience in using music in healthcare, in particular as a adjunct to sedation in intensive care and pioneered 'Music and Memory' for patients with Alzheimer's disease.

I self produce the majority of my work in my home studio in Uralla as well as on location.

ARTIST STATEMENT

If Sontag is to be believed, "the camera makes reality atomic": Meaning that through photography, the world becomes a series of unrelated, freestanding particles. Except, that's not how I see it. The world through my photography is a series of interrelated, emotionally-laden collections of pixels and inks. As a flâneur, I observe, I document, I seek to interact and I seek to relay not just my thoughts and feelings associated with the world and its inhabitants, but to invoke strong and strange feelings in those who view my work. As I see it, the world and its inhabitants are a series of particular particulates arranged via patterns, connected both knowingly and unknowingly through this thing we call life. I seek to float above, beside or within these patterns and reflect them back upon the viewer, to stimulate, provoke and elicit emotion.

Yaama everyone my name is Shae Duncan and I'm a proud Gamilaraay woman from Moree NSW. I am a graduate of NAISDA Dance College with a Diploma in Professional Dance Performance. I would love to start sharing and creating dance and performance within our community here in Moree, and provide opportunities to community for self development within families for learning, healing and growing.

Recognition

Throughout my dance career, I've explored many styles of dance from traditional cultural dance, contemporary dance, jazz, ballet, and more. Throughout my journey as a dancer I've had the pleasure to tour parts of Australia with an interactive kids show "Datiwuy Dreaming" in collaboration with NAISDA Dance College, Musica Viva and cultural tutors from North East Arnhem Land to offer cultural awareness in schools.

Over many years I've had the privilege to work for Beyond Empathy as a teacher/performer and choreographer and be presented in Festivals such as "Brolga Festival" and "Festival Of The Brave". With many thanks to NORPA I've had an amazing opportunity and experience to perform internationally within Indonesia at festivals such as the "Gawai Festival" and "Indigenous Celebrations Festivals" and much more.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Creating artworks is therapy for me. It’s something I really enjoy and find it very relaxing but also challenging. I like to paint subjects that resonate with me - a beautiful landscape, an inspiring scene, a loved family pet, an interesting face. There is nothing more satisfying for me as an artist than to find a new home for my artwork where it can be appreciated and enjoyed.

Karen has had no formal training but has benefitted from many informal classes and workshops. She has exhibited regularly at Redland Yurara Art Gallery and Studio, Thornlands Brisbane, Redland Art Gallery, Cleveland Brisbane and more recently Glen Innes Art Gallery where she was highly commended at the Glen Archies Portraiture Competition in 2019 and 2021

ARTIST STATEMENT

Helena Pastor is a regional writer living on Anaiwan Country in Armidale, NSW. Through memoir and fiction, she aims to encourage discussion around topics close to her heart including all stages of motherhood, the aftershocks of war, and growing up in an immigrant family. Her writing has attracted two Australian Society of Authors’ Mentorships, along with residencies at Varuna Writers’ House, Bundanon, Booranga and KSP Writers’ Centres, The Gunyah, and a 2021 Bush Retreat for Eco-Writers (BREW) Residency at Tamborine Mountain. She has also completed two postgraduate degrees on the transformative possibilities of Creative Nonfiction writing. Helena’s first book, Wild Boys: A Parent’s Story of Tough Love (UQP, 2015) is an intimate insight into reconnecting troubled teenagers with their families and communities. She is also a songwriter and lyricist, working in the narrative tradition of songwriting and collaborating with composer Christopher Purcell. They are currently recording their catalogue of songs for an Arts project called ‘Stories in Song’ (funded by Arts North West and Regional Arts NSW).

ARTIST STATEMENT

I like to chalk my reasons for doing what I do down to my disabilities, mostly because I think it’s funny. But in truth, it’s also precisely what has been one of my most consistent sources of inspiration and motivation.

When you’re autistic (if you ever decide to try it out), you often feel as though you’re looking in from the outside. As if there is always a thin gossamer film between yourself and everything else in life. It’s this point of view that I owe a lot of my inspiration to, and it’s given me a unique outlook to work from. Art has been one of my most reliable forms of expression, and I love trying to depict the indescribable sentiments and experiences in life through visual storytelling and abstraction of the mundane.

More recently, as I've been taking on commissioned work, I’ve been working at developing my illustrative style and character design as well.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am an artist and musician from Tamworth, New South Wales.

Art: I specialise in portraiture (oils & graphite) with a focus on expression, and a drive to capture the person and their personality. I am also currently part-way through the sketch series #Countrycharacters, portraying distinct and interesting characters from all around Australia.

Music: Was training as an operatic tenor in Sydney before deciding to revert back to roots, and passion for country singing and songwriting.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Joanne Stead is a self-taught artist based in Tamworth, NSW. Describing herself as a “mum, artist and life enthusiast,” she recognises and draws on her surroundings, current issues, and “everyday magic” in her artmaking. “I believe that two of most important things in life are a sense of belonging and a sense of purpose,” Joanne says. “Feeling that you belong connects you the world around you, and feeling that you offer something meaningful connects you to society, so to have both is critically foundational. Reconnecting to my artistic side, as a reflection of what I can uniquely offer to the world, has been a major turning point for me.” A diverse artist, Joanne works across mediums including scraperboard, acrylics and linocut, with works depicting a range of subjects from her own experience and imagination. Climate change, species loss and the creation of a shared vision for the future, form a recurring theme in her current work. A founding member of the Tamworth Regional Art Collective, Joanne has also worked on seven public art projects over the last five years, including a number of murals and three large mosaic installations.

Erika Sorby is an emerging artist, born in Newcastle in 1995. She completed a double degree in Secondary Teaching and Fine Art (majoring in drawing and painting) at The University of Newcastle in 2017. Sorby has exhibited in many group shows and art prizes. She currently practices art around her teaching commitments.

Landscape artist working in encaustic, oils and mixed media

ARTIST STATEMENT

The earliest of our memories is what fascinates me. I am always striving towards pinpointing that connection between our first impressions of our environment, and its emotional corollary within our future lives. The work is a result of that endeavour. Landscapes articulating a personal reaction to the recollection of that fundamental impact. Expanding on this, I desire to explore further the connection of "bequeathed" memory. Asking the questions of past generations no longer here, whether we are the product of their emotional experience of landscape and environment. By producing encaustic works, which in themselves are products of layers over time, I aim to pose these same questions to the viewer. Landscape is our conduit for the spiritual, this has been illustrated across cultures and generations. By using encaustic, I am alternately building and layering, and reducing, carving and scraping out an image. There is a revelation in the work as it progresses, and in its final form. This process is a physical representation of searching those layers of memory. The resulting image is the vehicle in which the viewer will resonate with their own epiphany of those small personal, binding memories.
